Dominator Garage Door Repair – Part 5

As mentioned previously, the transformer on the main circuit board can sometimes burn out or become damaged by physical impact, as shown in the photo below.

When this happens, the circuit board would normally be considered unusable because a replacement transformer with exactly the same dimensions is no longer readily available.

I carried out extensive research and searched suppliers in South Korea, China and Europe. However, I could not find a transformer with exactly the same dimensions and electrical specifications as the original.

The original transformer had approximately the following specifications:

  • Primary input: 220–240 V AC, 50/60 Hz
  • Power rating: Approximately 3 VA
  • Secondary output: 24 V AC, 50/60 Hz

After a great deal of searching, I eventually found the following transformer:

  • Manufacturer’s part number: TRA2400001
  • Product: Carel 3 VA DIN-rail/panel-mount transformer
  • Primary voltage: 240 V AC
  • Secondary voltage: 24 V AC
  • Power rating: 3 VA
  • Compliance: RoHS and CE

Replacement Procedure

Remove the damaged original transformer using the same desoldering and soldering methods explained in Part 3.

When desoldering, avoid holding the soldering iron against the PCB for too long. Work carefully to prevent the solder pads or copper tracks from lifting or becoming damaged, then gently remove the old transformer.

Install the new transformer as shown in the picture and connect the power wires in accordance with the illustrated wiring arrangement.

I completed this transformer replacement on my own garage door opener in 2023, and it has continued to operate reliably without any problems for the past three years.
