Dominator garage doors are widely used throughout New Zealand. In particular, many models manufactured between 2000 and 2005 still seem to be in operation today. My house is no exception—we also have an older Dominator garage door opener.
Since these units are now more than 20 years old, it is only natural that they can develop various problems over time. In this blog series, I would like to share what I learned while trying to repair my garage door, using the practical knowledge I gained during my brief time working as an engineer.
When you call a professional garage door repair company, they will often recommend replacing the entire opener rather than diagnosing and repairing the specific fault. A complete replacement appears to cost more than NZ$1,000, and some companies charge over NZ$100 just to visit your home and inspect the problem. For me, this was extremely frustrating.
Based on my experience, I believe that around 80% of older Dominator garage door openers showing the following symptoms may be repaired by fixing one particular issue:
- When you try to operate the garage door using either the wall switch or the remote control, the door does not move, and you hear a clicking sound coming from the opener.
- Sometimes the garage door works normally, but at other times it suddenly stops working and produces the clicking sound described above.
- The opener is receiving mains power, but nothing happens when you press the operating button.
